Adventure Playground

Two Children Building Something at Adventure Playground

The Adventure Playground is closed for the season.

About the Program

Don’t expect the typical colourful play equipment like fixed swings and slides in this playground. Adventure playgrounds emphasize the importance of unstructured play. The drop-in play space allows kids age three to 12 to let their imaginations run wild as they play with:

  • Hammers
  • Nails
  • Other Materials
  • Planks of Wood
  • Tarps
  • Tires

Parents and caregivers can observe their children from outside the play area while children build, create, alter and enhance the space as they choose. Play is self-directed, creative and imaginative.

The concept is part of a growing playground trend that encourages kids to be curious and creative, to engage with their surroundings, and to test their limits within an environment of managed risk.

Benefits of Unstructured Play

Emerging research is recognizing the benefits of unstructured, risky and creative play for healthy child development. Through free and independent play, children can:

  • Develop creativity and self-confidence
  • Improve physical literacy
  • Learn how to identify hazards and assess risks
  • Practice critical thinking

Guidelines & Safety Tips

Keep these tips in mind for safe play while visiting the Adventure Playground:

  • Ask a play attendant for help if you have questions.
  • Kids are not presumed to be under the supervision of playground attendants.
  • Kids can come and go from the playground as they please.
  • Kids must wear closed-toed athletic shoes (no rubber shoes or sandals).
  • Please do not harm plants or nail into the trees.
  • The program is open to kids 3 to 12 years old.
  • This is not a drop-off activity. While parents are not to enter the playground, they are required to remain on-site to watch their children and monitor safe play.
