[ARCHIVED] Responsible Use Encouraged at Coquitlam Parks

Coquitlam

COQUITLAM, B.C., August 6, 2020 – With sunny weather drawing more people outdoors, Coquitlam is encouraging the public to enjoy the City’s parks and trails while making sure to use them responsibly.

Use of Coquitlam’s park system – which includes 70-plus parks and more than 90 kilometres of trails – has climbed in recent months as people seek out safe outdoor spaces to exercise, relax, socialize with friends and family, and even hold meetings. However, with the added pressure on the city’s parks comes the need for visitors to use the spaces safely, responsibly and courteously.

Park Use Dos and Don’ts

Coquitlam has been closely monitoring the City’s public parks and trails to ensure the safe enjoyment of all users. Park visitors are encouraged to:

  • Have fun and use the park in creative ways, such as exercising with a small group of friends;
  • Physically distance from strangers and keep to their bubble;
  • Be considerate of other park users; and
  • Clean up after themselves.

When using Coquitlam parks and trails, please don’t:

  • Gather in large groups;
  • Monopolize large spaces or equipment;
  • Play loud music or otherwise disrupt the enjoyment of others;
  • Leave your garbage behind;
  • Conduct any business activities or post signage; or
  • Confront others about whether or not they are physically distancing.

A Public Benefit

Because Coquitlam’s parks are provided for the public benefit, City bylaws prohibit private businesses from advertising or operating in them in any way, even if services are free. Only the City’s publicly-sponsored programs are permitted.

Businesses seeking additional space to provide services are urged to look into Coquitlam’s Temporary Outdoor Business Spaces program, an expedited process that gives businesses access to adjacent private or public property for restaurant seating, display and sales space, checkout areas or other services. Details are available at www.coquitlam.ca/patios.

Family & Friends Field Times

To make sure everyone has a chance to use sports fields this summer, the City has set aside drop-in field times to allow for casual play for friend or family bubbles when the fields aren’t booked for recreation programs or organized sports. Grab your ball glove, Frisbee or soccer ball and hit the fields for some fun and exercise! Find out which fields are available at www.coquitlam.ca/sportsfields.
