[ARCHIVED] Have Your Say on Options for Sheffield Park

COQUITLAM, B.C., July 28, 2020 – Burke Mountain residents are invited to weigh in on options for a new neighbourhood park in Coquitlam’s Smiling Creek neighbourhood.

The two-acre (0.81-hectare) Sheffield Park is anticipated to be constructed next year near Chandler Street and Sheffield Avenue, proposing to bring fun spaces for children and youth, water play, washrooms, outdoor neighbourhood social space and other amenities to the growing neighbourhood.

Residents are invited to comment on the proposed features during an online open house set for early September, by phone or email, or by taking an online survey that will run from late August into September. Details are posted at www.coquitlam.ca/sheffield.

Amenities to Serve a Growing Neighbourhood

Sheffield Park development is identified within the Smiling Creek Neighbourhood Plan and supports the Plan’s implementation. The neighbourhood around Sheffield Park is largely family-oriented, with more than 70 per cent of residents aged 44 or younger and children making up almost 30 per cent of the population. The features proposed for the park aim to bring a balanced mix of amenities to the neighbourhood, which is currently served by several playgrounds and sport courts but offers limited water play features or park washrooms.

The proposed concept for Sheffield Park takes advantage of the site’s slope to provide spectacular views to the south. Features being considered include:

  • A water play area;
  • A washroom building;
  • A play area for younger children (ages two to five) that could include a dome play structure, slide and sand area;
  • A play area for older children (ages six to 11) that could include a challenging slope play structure, swings and slide;
  • A multifunctional youth area (ages 11 and up) that could include a basketball hoop, ball hockey net, skate area and terraced seating;
  • Table tennis for youth, adults and seniors;
  • A pathway system with several cardio walking circuit options;
  • Open lawn areas for picnicking and other informal uses; and
  • Gathering spaces, seating areas and a terraced lawn area.

Public feedback on the concept and planned features will help ensure the park meets the needs of the neighbourhood now and in the future.

Next Steps for Sheffield Park

Public feedback collected will inform the park’s detailed design, which will be developed over the late summer and fall and presented to Council for approval early in the new year. Construction is anticipated to begin in March.

The total approved and appropriated capital budget for the design and construction of Sheffield Park is $3.65 million. The park design concept presented can be achieved within the available capital budget; however, the total cost of the design and construction will be dependent on the scale and scope of the amenities that are incorporated into the final design of the park.
