[ARCHIVED] Message From the Mayor - April 22, 2021

Message From the Mayor Image

April 22, 2021

Many people are eagerly awaiting their COVID-19 vaccine. As for me, I’m happy to report that I’ve had my first dose – my sleeve was rolled up and I was ready for my jab as soon as my turn came.

You may have heard that Coquitlam’s Poirier Forum was selected as a Fraser Health immunization centre. Just as we worked with Fraser Health last fall to find space for a COVID testing site, the City of Coquitlam is proud to support Phases 3 and 4 of the BC Immunization Plan. As of March 15, the Poirier Forum continues to play host to an immunization centre for Coquitlam residents, as well as residents of neighbouring communities.

Fraser Health is leasing the space and is in charge of the clinic. With Council’s full support, City staff helped convert these facilities to a purpose they weren’t designed for, and worked hard to find new spaces for the many groups and programs that typically use this location.

The displacement of services is unfortunate but necessary, and to all those who will be inconvenienced over the coming months we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your cooperation and understanding. By making room for the clinic, you’ll be playing an important role in keeping all of us safe and getting our community past this pandemic.

For our part, the City will continue to work with our residents and user groups in the months ahead to help reduce the impact of the repurposing on our programs and services.

As with everything to do with COVID, there’s no instruction manual for this. As we see the numbers rise in this third wave and are asked yet again to stay local and avoid social gatherings, we understand how much of a toll this is taking. We appreciate the community’s understanding and Coquitlam Spirit as we all work together to beat this thing.

If you’re looking for ways to do your part, one thing you can do is to get vaccinated when it’s your turn. Science has done its part, Public Health has done its part, and now we need to do our part.

I had no hesitation about getting vaccinated myself and am proud to be contributing to immunity in our community. I would love to see all Coquitlam residents who can be vaccinated, get vaccinated – so we can protect those who cannot get the vaccine due to health conditions.

If you have questions about the clinic or vaccines, please contact Fraser Health at 1-855-755-2455 or visit www.fraserhealth.ca/vaccine for information.

We’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but we’re still in the tunnel for a while longer. Let’s continue to do the right thing, let’s continue to be in lockstep with health officials, so that we keep as many people as possible safe and healthy.

Richard Stewart
Mayor
