[ARCHIVED] Construction Begins on Centennial Artificial Turf Field

Turf Field

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 25, 2021 – Work has started on the much-anticipated lit artificial turf field at Centennial secondary.

Located at Poirier Street and Winslow Avenue, the state-of-the-art field will be used by students during school hours and by the community at other non-school times through a joint-use agreement between the City and School District 43 (SD43).

Field Suitable for Variety of Sports

City Council signed off in February on the detailed design for the field, which was developed in consultation with SD43 and the Coquitlam Field Sport Association. The detailed design addresses feedback from the community and school district and includes the following:

  • An artificial turf field with lines to accommodate seasonal sports including football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse;
  • Lighting for night games;
  • Pedestrian connections to the high school and Poirier Street;
  • Accessible connections for those with mobility challenges to the adjacent parking lot and Poirier Street;
  • Spectator bleachers; and
  • Landscaping, plantings, drinking fountain and benches.

During the Request for Proposals process, the City worked with contractors to reduce the construction timelines from the initial estimate of eight months. Work is anticipated to be completed by late fall 2021.

Information about this and other Coquitlam park development projects is posted at www.coquitlam.ca/parkprojects.

Project Benefits Both City and School District

The joint-use agreement for the new field is similar to one in place for the Dr. Charles Best secondary field. SD43 owns the land and will use the amenities during school hours. The City will build, operate and maintain the field, and the community will have use of the turf and Centennial’s external washrooms during non-school hours.

“The beginning of construction will be great news to the local athletes, sports groups and students who we know have been eagerly awaiting this new turf field,” Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said. “And we are proud to be delivering this project through a joint-use agreement with SD43. We know that everyone benefits when we work together to ensure that our collective resources create high-quality, improved amenities for our schools and our community.”

“The new turf field at Centennial Secondary will be a world-class addition to the school and neighbourhood," said School District 43 Board Chair Kerri Palmer Isaak. “A great amenity for student and community use has been realized with land provided by the school district and construction provided by the City. The Board of Education is very proud of its positive and cooperative working relationship with the City of Coquitlam and the resulting Centennial field project.”
