[ARCHIVED] New Master Plan Coming for Blue Mountain Park

COQUITLAM, BC, June 23, 2021 – Members of the public will soon be invited to join the process to plan the future of Coquitlam’s Blue Mountain Park.

As one of Coquitlam’s oldest and most popular community parks, the 8-hectare (19.9-acre) park provides a wide range of recreational services and amenities including civic buildings, a baseball diamond, playground, wading pool, water spray area, picnic shelters, tennis courts, a memorial cenotaph, a variety of trails, mature evergreen and specimen trees, horticultural displays and public art installations.

Planning for the Future of Blue Mountain Park

Many of the amenities currently in the park were built in the 1960s, and some as early as the 1930s, with additions, changes and improvements over time. With the growth happening in the Austin Heights and nearby Burquitlam-Lougheed neighbourhoods, it’s time to create a new master plan for the park with a phased implementation plan to ensure it can continue to support the community into the future.

How, where and when the City renews existing amenities in the park including the park washroom/concession building, Scout Hall, the wading pool and the spray deck will be determined through the process and will consider new amenities proposed nearby, such as the upcoming of Spani Pool at Mundy Park includes a new destination leisure pool with wading and water spray features.

With the guidance of other key strategy documents including the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan, the Aquatic Service and Infrastructure Strategy, the Tennis and Pickleball Services and Facilities Strategy, as well as through public engagement, staff will develop a Master Plan for Blue Mountain Park with an accompanying 20-year implementation strategy.

Options to Provide Input

The City will be seeking public, First Nations and stakeholder input through multiple rounds of engagement beginning this summer with an opportunity to help develop the vision and objectives for the Blue Mountain Park Master Plan.

More information will be provided on the engagement, including dates for online information sessions and opportunities to provide input, through the project’s engagement page at letstalkcoquitlam.ca/bluemountainpark. Those interested can also sign up for email updates through that page, or through the City’s NotifyMe email service at www.coquitlam.ca/notifyme.
