COQUITLAM, B.C., April 5, 2022 – More paving, updated streetscapes, an improved water system and other upgrades are in the works this year as Coquitlam continues to invest in core transportation and utility infrastructure.
Transportation and utility projects are taking place around Coquitlam in 2022, supporting safety, asset management, economic development and housing growth by improving the movement of people and goods, ensuring reliable sewer and water services and managing stormwater. Council received an update on this year’s plans and last year’s accomplishments at Monday’s Regular Council meeting.
Planned Improvements in 2022
Since last year, Coquitlam’s Capital Plan has included increased funding for local road paving, as well as any concurrent water main upgrades. Whenever possible, the City synchronizes the construction of capital projects in the same area – water mains and sidewalks, for example – to reduce disruption and costs.
New projects for 2022 are funded through the approved Capital Plan for 2022-2025, financed by various development fees along with other revenues, reserves and grants. Transportation and utility works slated for 2022 include:
- Road repaving: Approximately 25 kilometres of road repaving throughout the community.
- Gatensbury Street: A new multi-use pathway, intersection and crosswalk improvements, and streetscape upgrades, such as curbs, sidewalks and lighting.
- Pipeline Road Upgrade Project: Upgrades from Guildford Way to David Avenue are being coordinated with Metro Vancouver water main upgrades planned to begin later this year.
- Partington Creek: Road and utility design and construction work in the City-owned lands in this neighbourhood, home of the future Burke Mountain Village.
- Cedar Drive Upgrade Project: Work continues on a multi-year drainage upgrade and expansion project, includes pre-construction activities for the new road, property acquisition and construction of utilities.
Projects Completed in 2021
This year’s projects build on transportation and utility improvements in 2021 that included:
- Harbour Chines area: 1.8 kilometres of sidewalk and 1.6 kilometres of water main upgrades, as well as repaving six kilometres of local roads.
- Road safety: Intersection upgrades on Pinetree Way at Douglas College and the Pinetree Community Centre, and improvements on Lincoln Avenue between Pinetree Way and Westwood Street such as median upgrades, road paving and a permanent curb bulge.
- Streetscapes: Upgraded property frontages to modern streetscape standards – including curb and gutter, sidewalks, lighting and landscaped boulevards – on sections of Walls Avenue, Stewart Avenue and Delestre Avenue.
- King Albert Greenway: Completion of final pathway paving and landscape restoration for this greenway project, which recently received an Infrastructure Improvement Award from the Tri-Cities HUB Committee, a local cycling advocacy group.
- Drainage utilities: Several projects to improve drainage and manage stormwater, including the Harper Drive Base Flow Facility near Mitchell Drive which holds about one million litres of water and will feed the headwaters of Fox Creek. The work was completed cost-effectively in coordination with development work.
- Cedar Drive/Partington Drive: Community outreach and construction activities for this multi-year project, to mitigate flooding, provide environmental upgrades, a new road, as well as a new sanitary sewer system.
