[ARCHIVED] Celebrate Earth Day by Nominating an Environmental Champion

News Flash

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 21, 2022 – The celebration of Earth Day, Friday, April 22, is a great opportunity to take action for the environment by nominating an environmental champion. Coquitlam residents, students and organizations have until Sunday, May 8 to submit nominations for the City’s 2022 Environmental Achievement Awards.

Nominees do not need to be residents of Coquitlam, but their activities or projects should occur in Coquitlam or directly benefit our community. Nominations can be submitted online at coquitlam.ca/enviroawards

About the Awards

Coquitlam’s Environmental Achievement Awards recognize community volunteers and environmental stewards who lead environmental sustainability initiatives and work to promote, preserve and enhance Coquitlam's natural environment.

The awards also support the success of Coquitlam’s Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) by acknowledging those residents and community partners whose volunteer actions play an important role in stewarding the natural environment for current and future generations.

Nominees can be teachers and educators, schools, organizations and service clubs, as well as individual adults, youth and children.

Awards Recognize a Wide Range of Contributions

Since 2004, the Environmental Achievement Awards have recognized the contributions of more than 20 groups and hundreds of volunteers who have taken on initiatives year-round that support environmental sustainability.

Some of the volunteer actions and projects recognized in previous years include: shoreline and litter cleanups, salmon habitat restoration, storm drain marking, nest box maintenance, guided public hikes, pollinator gardens, educational events, invasive plant removal and stewardship activities.

Coquitlam’s Environmental Sustainability Plan

Coquitlam finalized an Environmental Sustainability Plan (ESP) in January 2022 that will guide decisions to ensure the long-term resiliency and sustainability of the community. The ESP is organized into five themes: Climate Action, Built Environment, Waste Management, Water Management and Natural Areas, Wildlife and Habitat. The implementation plan includes a final list of 135 actions along with a Top 10 list of priorities for 2022. Learn more about the ESP at coquitlam.ca/enviroplan.
