COQUITLAM, B.C., July 5, 2022 – Adults will now be able to drink alcohol responsibly at Coquitlam parks.
The Responsible Consumption of Liquor in Public Places Bylaw was approved by Council on Monday and will allow alcohol consumption at more than 50 parks in Coquitlam from dawn to dusk, excluding property owned, leased or licensed to the City by School District 43. Signage will be posted at parks letting users know if alcohol is allowed or not and a list of included parks can be found at coquitlam.ca/alcohol.
The bylaw will be effective until May 31, 2023, when staff will report to Council with an evaluation and next steps.
Pandemic Highlights Importance of Public Spaces
During the COVID-19 pandemic, municipalities across Metro Vancouver looked for ways to allow residents to gather and socialize safely when indoor gatherings were restricted, further highlighting the importance of accessible public spaces in our communities.
Responsible consumption of alcohol in parks is one way many municipalities have responded to the ongoing demand for places to gather and socialize outdoors.
