[ARCHIVED] Commercial Vehicle Safety Education Event

Commercial Vehicle Safety Education Event

COQUITLAM, B.C., March 13, 2023 – Owners and operators of commercial vehicles across the lower mainland are invited to a free education event in Coquitlam March 21 offering commercial vehicle safety advice, information and inspections.

Held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Town Centre Park Lot E (1321-1327 Pinetree Way), the education event will be the latest addition to Coquitlam Bylaw Enforcement and Coquitlam RCMP’s ongoing commercial vehicle safety efforts. No registration is required, commercial vehicle owners and operators are welcome to drop by and speak to an officer.

Education Focused

Coquitlam Bylaw Enforcement and Coquitlam RCMP officers will be on hand Tuesday, March 21 to provide information and answer questions about rules and regulations for commercial vehicles, such as:

  • Maintenance, including brake condition;
  • Pre-trip inspections;
  • Driver licensing rules;
  • Municipal bylaws;
  • Cargo rules; and
  • Any other related topic.

With a focus on education and awareness, the event aims to provide an informal setting for commercial vehicle owners, drivers or operators to ask questions and learn about safety and regulatory requirements. While this is an informal education opportunity, vehicles that are deemed unsafe will be taken out of service until fixed.

The event is being promoted to trucking associations to attract a regional attendance.

A Regional Approach to Road Safety

Coquitlam Bylaw Enforcement and Coquitlam RCMP personnel work with their counterparts across the Lower Mainland to ensure road safety for all users through commercial vehicle education and enforcement. This work includes enforcement blitzes, during which commercial vehicles are pulled over and checked for mechanical and vehicle issues, unsafe driving and other violations, and may be designated out of service on the spot if there are sufficient concerns. Results are often posted on social media with the hashtag #LMDCVE.

Commercial vehicle operation in B.C. is covered under a variety of legislation, including municipal bylaws, the Motor Vehicle Act, Commercial Transport Act, Transportation Act, Passenger Transportation Act, Transport of Dangerous Goods Act, Motor Fuel Tax Act and the federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act Regulations. More information can be found at www.cvse.ca or Vehicle Safety & Enforcement Contacts - Province of British Columbia (gov.bc.ca).
