National Indigenous Peoples Day
Friday, June 21, 2024
Today marks National Indigenous Peoples Day – a day to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Today we celebrate the rich traditions and cultures of Indigenous peoples, the original inhabitants of these lands and waters.
We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the Hunkomenem (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word Kwikwetlem (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the Kwikwetlem traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the Katzie (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
Through the practice of cultural humility, we encourage you to learn more about, advocate for and reconcile with Indigenous Peoples.
