Hollywood North

Movie fans may be interested to know that the Coquitlam River area was an early ‘Hollywood North’. In the 1930’s, Karl Jacobs, a Canadian born stunt man, married actress, Clara Guiol and purchased the Oxbow Ranch. Renaming it Steelhead Lodge, they built cabins, and fashioned it into a fishing lodge and Hollywood hide-away. The location was rumoured to have been visited by such stars as:

  • Carol Lombard
  • Clark Gable
  • Errol Flynn
  • John Wayne
  • Kim Novak
  • Roy Rogers
Local residents remembered seeing a line of luxury cars, some with chauffeurs, making their way along the dirt roads towards the ranch. Several streets in the River Springs area were named after the famous visitors.
