Salmon in the Coquitlam River

Five salmon species can be found in the Coquitlam River:

  • Chinook / King Salmon
  • Chum Salmon
  • Coho Salmon
  • Pink Salmon
  • Sockeye Salmon

Pink
Salmon are the most abundant and the smallest species in BC, while Chinook, also known as King Salmon, is the largest. Chum Salmon are not very good jumpers - a waterfall can stop their upstream migration. The juvenile Coho is a very dynamic mover, performing a complex series of maneuvers to defend its territory. Sockeye Salmon, until recently, were locally extinct from the Coquitlam River. After a 100 years, thanks to a collaborative restoration effort, the Sockeye are returning in small numbers.
