COQUITLAM, B.C., July 14, 2025 – Coquitlam has revealed the schematic designs for the highly anticipated community centre on Burke Mountain and nearby Burke Village Park, marking a major step forward in delivering vital amenities to Northeast Coquitlam.
What to Expect
Nestled into the scenic mountainside, the Burke Mountain Community Centre (previously referred to as the Northeast Community Centre) will offer a range of amenities and services to get active, learn something new or connect with others. Building on feedback gathered during earlier engagement, this modern, light-filled facility will include:
- A six-lane lap pool, leisure pool with lazy river, hot pool, steam room and sauna, all with accessible features
- A double gymnasium for sports and active play
- A fully equipped fitness centre with a weight room and studio space
- Flexible, multi-purpose rooms for programs, meetings and events
- A new branch of the Coquitlam Public Library, located inside the facility
To showcase the stunning natural surroundings, large windows throughout the facility and a second storey balcony will bring in views of the valley, river and mountains below.
Targeting Zero Carbon Building Standard and Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification, the project exemplifies Coquitlam’s commitment to environmental sustainability, accessibility and community-focused design.

Right Next Door: Burke Village Park
Next to the community centre, Burke Village Park is set to become a vibrant gathering place for residents of Northeast Coquitlam and the community. The park will include:
- A splash pad with interactive ground jets for summer fun
- Flexible event spaces and ample seating for community events like outdoor movie nights or farmers' markets
- An accessible, elevated pathway to bring visitors into the mountainside park on a gradual slope
- A dedicated Streamside Protection and Enhancement Area to protect important watercourses

New Name Reflecting the Neighbourhood
Referenced as the Northeast Community Centre during early planning and engagement, the new facility will be named for its location on Burke Mountain. This aligns with the City’s naming strategy which aims to help residents easily identify and navigate Coquitlam’s facilities by connecting them to their neighbourhood geography.
Project Timeline
With schematic design complete, which is a typical first phase of the architectural process, the facility and park are moving into the final design stages. The detailed design will be refined through the end of this year and shared with the community. Early site work and construction will start in 2026. Both the facility and the park are expected to open in 2029.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
