Don’t Leaf It Too Long – Free Fall Yard Waste Collection is Back

Coquitlam residents that receive collection from the City can take advantage of free curbside pickup for extra yard waste from October 20 to November 28.

City News Posted on October 14, 2025

COQUITLAM, B.C., October 14, 2025 – Fall means colourful leaves, cozy sweaters – and yard work. To help with the cleanup, Coquitlam residents that receive collection from the City can take advantage of free curbside pickup for extra yard waste from October 20 to November 28.

During Coquitlam’s six-week unlimited yard trimmings collection program, you can set out the extra green waste generated from seasonal cleanups, such as fallen leaves, grass clippings and pruned branches.

This service is offered twice a year to make seasonal yard work easier. Last year, the City collected more than 440 tonnes of yard waste – keeping yards tidy, preventing leaves from clogging storm drains and turning green waste into compost.

So, rake it, bag it, bundle it – and let us take it from there.

How to Prepare Yard Waste for Pickup

To take part in this program, simply place extra yard trimmings in old garbage cans labeled with a Yard Trimmings sticker, in kraft paper bags or in bundles tied with twine and place at the curb on your regular collection day. Yard Trimmings stickers are available for free at Coquitlam City Hall’s Engineering counter or at the City Centre and Poirier Public Libraries.

Here’s what you need to know to ensure smooth collection:

  • Have your extra yard trimmings set out by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day. Note that a separate truck will collect the extra yard waste, so it may be picked up at a different time than your Green Cart.
  • While bundles, cans and kraft bags of yard trimmings can be placed out early, City-issued Green Carts must only be set out after 5:30 a.m. on collection day to avoid fines, even if they contain only yard trimmings.
  • Keep branches in tied bundles no longer than 1 meter (3 feet) in length and less than 7.5 centimeters (3 inches) in diameter.
  • Each bag, can or bundle should weigh less than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Items like sod, rocks, soil and plastic bags are not accepted.
  • Food scraps should only be put in your regular Green Cart – keep them out of kraft bags or other containers used for extra yard trimmings.
  • Ensure your materials are placed curbside without blocking sidewalks or streets. If rain is expected, cover kraft bags with a tarp to protect them from getting soggy and delay placing them out until the morning of collection.
  • Please do not set out yard waste materials before your first collection day the week of October 20, as wet bags and containers are difficult to collect.
