COQUITLAM, B.C., May 27, 2026 – Dog owners will soon have a new pooch park in the southwest neighbourhood of Burquitlam-Lougheed for their furry friends to play and socialize.
City Council approved the final design of the Brookmere Park Off-Leash Dog Park following community feedback on two options presented through an online survey. The new park aligns with Council’s Strategic Plan priority to establish community amenities that support growing neighbourhoods, such as in southwest Coquitlam.
Park Integrates into Natural Area
Brookmere Park, located along Austin Avenue, was identified as the preferred location due to its size, accessibility and compatibility with surrounding uses.
When complete, the off-leash dog area will cover approximately .60 acres, offering a puppy’s paradise that includes fenced and separate small and large dog areas with gated entries, and a covered shelter. Pedestrian-level lighting will reduce worry from nearby residents who were concerned about light pollution and also ensure visitor safety and comfort.
Amenities such as water for dogs and people, seating, trees and agility features (i.e. ramps, boulders, logs) will provide a functional and inviting space for both dogs and owners. In response to public feedback that expressed concerns about gravel as a surface material, existing turf will be preserved where possible within the off-leash area. Furthermore, the dog park blends into the area’s natural setting, uses a smaller footprint to minimize impacts on existing amenities such as the ball diamond and picnic area, and is suited to encourage canine socialization by allowing owners with dogs of varying sizes to enjoy the amenities.
Community Engaged on Design Options
Community input was gathered in an online public survey in February 2026. Feedback helped guide decisions on use of space, desired amenities and features such as lighting and seating.
The survey input also indicated some concerns around loss of park space; however, in the coming years, Brookmere Park will be expanded as part of a development proposal that would increase its footprint from 5.34 acres to almost six acres.
Construction of the off-leash dog park is expected to begin this summer with completion in the fall.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
