Storms and High Winds

In British Columbia, winter weather can mean high winds causing power failures or fallen trees. Here are some steps you can take to prevent impacts to you, your home and neighbours:

  • Weakened trees can be a hazard. Guard your home from falling branches by pruning dead branches and removing dead trees on your property.
  • In the event of a high wind warning, be watchful for fallen trees, and never touch hanging or downed power lines.
  • Avoid walking in wooded areas during high winds.
  • When driving, watch for trees or branches on roadways, and check for road closures before heading out.
  • Secure belongings and objects that might blow away in a storm, including garbage cans and lawn furniture.

Fallen trees can take down power lines, and in storm conditions this may mean several days without power to your home.

  • Have an emergency kit with flashlights and batteries in case of power failure.
  • Be sure you have supplies and food to sustain your household for a few days in the event of prolonged power outages. Don't plan to rely on restaurants, as they may be impacted too.
