Business Preparedness

Emergencies can happen at any time and may affect your employees, customers, property and operations. Preparing in advance can help your business respond safely, reduce losses, and reopen sooner.

  • Identify the hazards most likely to affect your workplace.
  • Create an emergency plan that outlines what staff should do before, during, and after an emergency.
  • Train employees so they know how to respond, support customers or visitors, and communicate during an emergency.
  • Develop a business continuity plan that outlines how your business will recover or maintain its activities in the event of a disruption to normal business operations.
  • Prepare an emergency kit for your workplace with supplies including food and water.
  • Protect important records and data by backing them up.
  • Review insurance coverage and understand what documentation may be needed to support a claim after an emergency.
  • Review and update your plans at least once a year, when your business operations change, or after an exercise or emergency.
  • Coordinate emergency plans with other tenants, neighbours and business partners.
