The City is planning a new community centre on Burke Mountain that will meet the needs of current and future residents of this growing Northeast Coquitlam community – as well as residents across the community – with amenities including pools, gymnasiums and a fitness centre. See below for the proposed building program and public engagement information. View the site plan.
Targeted to open in 2028 in the future Burke Mountain Village, the proposed 7,430-square-metre (80,000-square-foot) Northeast Community Centre will include a range of services including aquatics, gymnasiums, fitness, library and community space sized to meet the anticipated demand for recreation and community centre services in the area.
The proposed building concept for the three-storey building includes:
The concept also includes Burke Village Park, centrally located next to the future community centre, and providing a critical pedestrian link from outside the Village directly into the heart of the Burke Mountain Village neighbourhood.

The Burke Mountain neighbourhood in Northeast Coquitlam is expected to grow from its current population of more than 20,000 people, to about 50,000 in the next 25 years. Coquitlam’s Parks Recreation and Culture Master Plan identified the future need for a comprehensive multi-use community centre in the Burke Mountain Village neighbourhood area.
Public consultation, strategic planning, best practices and other research have helped shape the vision for the NECC as an inclusive and accessible facility that will showcase the natural mountainside setting.
Coquitlam is committed to continuing to engage the community and stakeholders in the planning process to ensure the centre reflects the current and future needs of the surrounding neighbourhood.
A community survey in fall 2019 was the beginning of the community centre planning process. Additional visioning and community consultation took place in 2020 to refine the concept. A summary of that feedback is available in the Northeast Community Centre What We Heard infographic (PDF).
In total, the City heard from more than 1,000 people during public engagement in 2019 to 2020, including 13 community groups and three interpreted sessions in Mandarin, Korean and Farsi.
We acknowledge that these lands are traditional and ancestral lands of kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) First Nation. Ongoing staff discussions are also taking place with the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation.
A second round of public engagement took place in late 2019 and early 2020 seeking feedback on the proposed site-fit (a facility’s layout on the property) and program. Here's What We Heard in Phase 2 (PDF).
Staff will further analyze how this feedback can be incorporated into the final community centre design, along with feasibility and cost implications. The next phase of engagement will take place in 2024. The project team will provide updates here as well as on the engagement project page. Following the public engagement in fall 2021, staff reported back to Council in 2023 to lay out the next steps, including financing and the procurement process.
