Mobile food vending is a trend that is on the rise. Coquitlam has seen an increased number of mobile food vendors wishing to operate at community events or independently within City limits.
Requirements
Prior to operating in Coquitlam, all food vendors must do the following:
- Pass an annual fire inspection
- Display a valid Greater Vancouver Fire Chief’s Association (GVFCA) decal (issued during fire inspection)
- Hold a valid health permit (Fraser or Coastal Health certificate of approval)
- Obtain a street vendor business licence through the City Licensing Department
Once mobile food vendors have passed their annual fire inspection, they will be issued a GVFCA decal that is recognized by most Lower Mainland Fire Departments. As a result, food vendors will not need to have multiple fire inspections done. However, each municipality has its own regulations about obtaining a business licence. Please be sure to contact the municipality you plan to operate in to see if a business licence is required.
Inspections
Food vendors should consider attending the annual Food Truck Inspection Day, which is held annually in early April at the Langley Events Center. Nearly 20 representatives from fire departments across the Lower Mainland will be on-site conducting inspections of food trucks and food trailers throughout the day. This day, along with the new inspection program, is a coordinated effort, led by the GVFCA.
