Swimming Lessons Transition to the Lifesaving Society 

The Canadian Red Cross is no longer offering swimming and lifeguard programs in order to focus on surging humanitarian demands in other areas.

What does this mean for you? Coquitlam has transitioned to the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program.

Is your child feeling nervous about going swimming at the pool? Reference our Social Story to help them prepare for the experience. 

One Set at a Time

Swimming lesson participants can only be registered for one set of lessons at a time. You may register your child for the next set of lessons on the last day of the current set. 

Please note, your child will be withdrawn from a program(s) if registered in more than one lesson set, or if they are registered in future lesson sets prior to completing the set they are currently registered in.

Lifeguard Certification

If you are interested in becoming a lifeguard or swim instructor, view the How to Become a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor (PDF) to see the steps required.  Go to the online registration system to see program availability.

Bronze Star

  • Basic lifesaving
  • Excellent preparations for success in Bronze Medallion
  • Requirements: Ages 8 to 12 years

Bronze Medallion

  • Learn basic water rescue, first aid and resuscitation techniques.
  • Prerequisites: 13 years or older, or Bronze Star

Bronze Cross

  • Learn advanced lifesaving rescues and basic aquatic leadership skills.
  • Prerequisites: All ages, Bronze Medallion

Standard First Aid with CPR Level C

  • Learn primary and secondary assessment skills, personal protective equipment, rescue breathing, one and two rescuer Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and more
  • Prerequisites: Ages 14 years and older

National Lifeguard – Pool

  • Gain an understanding of the principles, good judgment, communication skills and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of a lifeguard
  • Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, 15 years and older

Swim and Lifesaving Instructor Combo

  • Trains candidates to teach both the Swim for Life and Bronze Medallion programs. 
  • Successful completion will result in both a Swim Instructor (SI) and a Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) certification.
  • Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, 15 years and older
