Coquitlam Public Library Board Volunteer Recruitment 

Eligibility

Applicants for the Public Library Board must meet the following criteria:

• Must be 18 years of age or older on January 1, 2027
• May not be officers or employees of the City of Coquitlam or the Coquitlam Public Library
• Must reside in Coquitlam (or otherwise be an elector of the municipality)
• May not serve more than eight (8) consecutive years on the Public Library Board

Assessment

Applicants for the Public Library Board will be assessed in the following areas:

• Governance and strategy (policy/governance; previous Board experience; strategic development; risk management)
• Finance and administration (finance/accounting; human resources; project/change management)
• Communications and outreach (communications/public relations; marketing; advocacy; fundraising)
• Sector-specific experience (community/non-profit organization; library; training/education)
• Technology and innovation
• Legal and compliance

Applicants of any age, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, neighbourhood, and income level are encouraged to apply.

• The Public Library Board meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m., except in March, August, and December.
• Board meetings are held in person at Library branch locations.
• Committees of the Board have varied schedules and meetings are usually held virtually.
•  Appointments are for a two-year term.

Commitment to the Coquitlam Public Library Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan sets out goals and objectives within the Library’s vision, mission, and values. Applicants must be committed to strive toward the vision, carry out the mission, and achieve the goals and objectives while upholding these values.

Expectations

Successful applicants will be expected to:

• Serve the full term of their appointment by attending scheduled meetings
• Prepare for each meeting, which includes reading the agenda package
• Participate fully in board discussions
• Participate in board committees and/or represent the library on related associations, as required
• Attend a share of key public and staff events on behalf of the board

While the overall time commitment varies depending on Committee participation, successful applicants should be prepared to commit a minimum of 8-10 hours per month. 

As these are volunteer positions, successful candidates will serve without remuneration.

Appointments are made by City Council. Applicants will receive a letter from the City in late November 2026 advising of appointment decisions.

 As a part of the application process, the Library Board and staff may interview prospective candidates. Prospective candidates may be required to provide additional information at the time of the interview and consent to do so by signing the consent statement that is included with this application.
