Reduce your clutter and your environmental impact by registering for Coquitlam’s Fall City-Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway Event.

COQUITLAM, B.C. August 29, 2024 – Reduce your clutter and your environmental impact by registering for Coquitlam’s Fall City-Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway Event taking place Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event is a great opportunity to sell or give away household items in good condition, while contributing to environmental sustainability and community waste-reduction efforts. It’s also an inexpensive way to find bargains and keep items out of the landfill.

Since 2014, our successful events have seen a consistent number of registered households each year, with over 1,700 registered participants since the event started.

Register Online

Registration opens Thursday, August 29 and closes 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18.

Coquitlam residents can choose to participate on one or both dates, and to sell or give away items.

Residents can also select the categories of items such as books and toys, clothing, electronics, household decoration and furniture, lawn and garden tools and sports equipment.

This event is open to single-family and duplex homes, as well as multi-family homes who confirm the property owner, property manager or Strata has approved. Online registration and details are available at coquitlam.ca/GarageSale.

Fall Swap and Sale

Also on Saturday, September 21, the City is hosting a Fall Swap and Sale at Centennial Pavilion (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.). Open to adults (19+), residents can register at coquitlam.ca/SignMeUp using Course ID 00167435 ($30/table).

The Fall Swap and Sale is a good opportunity for residents of multi-family housing who have items to sell or giveaway and want to participate in the City Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway but may not have space or permission. The Fall Swap and Sale registration deadline is Friday, September 13.

Minimize Waste

The City-Wide Garage Sale and Giveaway Event aligns with the City's Waste Management goals in its Environmental Sustainability Plan: minimize waste generation, maximize reuse, recycling and material recovery, and ensure adequate disposal opportunities exist to discourage illegal dumping and littering.

Recycling Options

If residents have items remaining after the event, the City suggests these options for donation and proper disposal:

  • Check out organizations and locations on our Guide to Donating Locally.
  • Residents who receive Coquitlam’s curbside collection service can request curbside pickup of up to four large items such as furniture, white goods or mattresses with the Large-item Pickup program by calling Waste Connections of Canada at 604-636-3521. coquitlam.ca/LIPU
  • Drop off eligible items at the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre, 995 United Boulevard. The facility features a large, full-service recycling depot for the free drop-off of recyclables including flexible plastic packaging, plastic bags, beverage containers, cardboard, books, textiles, batteries, expanded polystyrene, light fixtures, cooking oil, paint products, pesticides and gasoline, propane tanks and electronics and more.
  • Recyclable items such as books, batteries, glass containers and more can be recycled at the City's Recycling Depot in Town Centre Park on Trevor Wingrove Way. Please check the City’s website for accepted products. coquitlam.ca/Recycling
  • Residents can use the Waste Wizard search tool to enter whatever item they need to recycle, giveaway or dispose of and to find out where and how to dispose of it correctly. coquitlam.ca/WasteWizard.

Coquitlam’s Environmental Sustainability Plan

Coquitlam finalized a forward-looking Environmental Sustainability Plan in January 2022 that guides decisions and ensures the long-term resiliency and sustainability of the community. The Environmental Sustainability Plan is organized into five themes: Climate Action, Built Environment, Waste Management, Water Management and Natural Areas, Wildlife and Habitat and includes 135 actions spanning all five themes. Since approval of the Environmental Sustainability Plan, the City has made significant strides implementing the plan. Learn more at coquitlam.ca/Enviroplan.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
