[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Taking Proactive Measures to Support Public Safety

We know that members of our community may have concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and the City will be providing updates, as required, on the impacts to Coquitlam programs, services and facilities.

COQUITLAM, B.C., March 10, 2020 – We know that members of our community may have concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and the City will be providing updates, as required, on the impacts to Coquitlam programs, services and facilities.

Municipal governments are guided by the direction of local, provincial and federal health authorities on matters related to public health. As of today, the BC Centre for Disease Control continues to advise that, while there are confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in British Columbia, the risk remains low in our area.

At this time the City is proceeding with all scheduled programs and events. We do have in place enhanced cleaning measures within our facilities, and we are also asking all residents to observe good hygiene practices, as recommended by the local health authorities.

City Actions Guided by Health Authorities
Recognizing that the current priority is containing the spread of the virus, City staff are closely monitoring the current coronavirus situation and following the infection control measures as recommended by health authorities.

Currently, their direction to public agencies is to take precautions similar to those typical of seasonal influenza. This includes signage encouraging good hygiene practices and enhanced cleaning of public touch points, such as door handles and light switches, within our civic facilities.

If the risk within our community increases, it is important to know that the City of Coquitlam has in place the organizational structure, emergency plans and processes in place to monitor and address emerging issues like this one.

What You Can Do
Whether at home, or in one of our City facilities, practice good hygiene:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
  • Cough and sneeze into your sleeve, not your hands;
  • Avoid touching your face; and
  • Stay home when you are unwell.

Be Informed
The City will be maintaining a resource page on its website at www.coquitlam.ca/covid19 to provide ongoing updates on the coronavirus situation as it relates to Coquitlam facilities, programs, services and events. As required, updates will also be shared through the City’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
