[ARCHIVED] Sheffield Park Construction to Begin this Spring

Kids Playing Park newsflash Construction is set to begin in late spring on a park that will bring new amenities for families and other residents of Burke Mountain.

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 13, 2021 – Construction is set to begin in late spring on a park that will bring new amenities for families and other residents of Burke Mountain.

Last night, Council approved the final design for Sheffield Park and gave staff the go-ahead to proceed with tendering the 0.81-hectare (two-acre) park project near Chandler Street and Sheffield Avenue. Construction is anticipated to take place from June to December.

The park’s design – the result of extensive public consultation and feedback from neighbourhood residents – includes children’s play areas, a water play area, a youth area, a rubberized fitness path, a washroom and drinking fountain, all connected by an accessible boomerang-shaped pathway. The site will also offer free public Wi-Fi and beautiful views down Burke Mountain.

Amenities for All Age Groups

The park is intended to complement nearby Riley Park and support a comprehensive offering of outdoor recreation services and amenities suited for the Smiling Creek’s primary demographic of young families, along with residents of all age groups and abilities. The design takes advantage of the sloped site to create opportunities to enjoy beautiful views across the Fraser River, while also providing a fully accessible pathway system linking all amenities.

Features will include:

  • The boomerang pathway at an accessible grade from park entry points;
  • A younger play area for ages two to five with a sand play area, water play table and slide;
  • An older play area for ages six to 11 with climbing structures, spinners and a slide;
  • A youth area for ages 12 and up with a basketball hoop, hockey net and skate spot;
  • A water play area with spray features and a channel with gates and dams for hands-on play;
  • A rubberized fitness path providing a vertical challenge for all ages along with elevation markers;
  • Seating areas throughout the park, including picnic tables, lounge chairs, benches and an overlook with panoramic south-facing views;
  • A single universal washroom built into the slope near the water play area, with a fully accessible roof-top deck with seating and views down Burke Mountain;
  • A drinking fountain in the centre of the park;
  • Free public WiFi for park users; and
  • Lawn, planting beds and power outlets for small neighbourhood gatherings and the Coquitlam Mobile Library.

The project design and construction funding will come from developer contributions and Development Cost Charges associated with development in the neighbourhood.
