COQUITLAM, B.C., June 6, 2022 – The community is invited to celebrate the much-anticipated opening of the Centennial Sports Field from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8 with music, food, games and more.
Located at Centennial Secondary (570 Poirier St.), the state-of-the-art lit sports field is a joint project of the City and School District 43 (SD43) and Coquitlam’s seventh artificial turf field.
Although the field has been enjoyed by local students and sports groups since April, the June 8 event is the official grand opening. Everyone is welcome to drop by from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for a free hot dog and water along with a ribbon cutting and speeches, live music by singer/songwriter Michelle Carlisle, sport try-its, lawn games and other fun activities.
Year-round Play for a Variety of Sports
Construction of the field began last year and wrapped up in March. Through the joint-use agreement between the City and SD43, students use the field during school hours and the community has access to the field and Centennial’s external washrooms at other times.
The new facility was developed in consultation with SD43, the Coquitlam Field Sport Association and the community, and includes:
- An artificial turf sports field with lines to accommodate seasonal sports including football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse;
- Spotter’s booths;
- Field lighting for night games;
- Pedestrian connections to the high school and the street;
- Accessible connections for those with mobility challenges to nearby parking lots and the street;
- Spectator bleachers and public benches; and
- Landscaping, plantings and a drinking fountain.
Information about this and other Coquitlam park development projects is posted at www.coquitlam.ca/parkprojects.
Project Benefits Both City and School District
The joint-use agreement for the Centennial sports field is similar to one in place for the Dr. Charles Best secondary field, allowing the City and SD43 to pool resources to bring improved amenities to schools and the community. SD43 owns the land, while the City built the field and will operate and maintain it.
